Ballard Season 1 Recap

Pinterest

Ballard Season 1 arrived on Amazon Prime this summer with a lot of expectations riding on it. Michael Connelly’s BoschVerse has already proven itself with Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, so when Detective Renée Ballard was announced as the next lead, fans were curious whether she could carry her own show.

Ten episodes later, my verdict is complicated. I’ve collected every single recap and review I wrote during the season into one place so you can revisit the twists, the questionable writing choices, and the handful of moments that actually worked. If you want to catch up or simply skim for the highlights, here are my full recaps.

Episode 1

Library of Lost Souls

Ballard blasts into the series with a shotgun, clashes with politics, and uncovers a DNA trail that ties her cold case to Bosch’s old serial killer.

Episode 2

Haystacks

The pace slows as Ballard fends off harassment. A naked lifeguard steals the spotlight until LAPD shows up in the truck tailing her.

Episode 3

BYOB

A frat house death exposes toxic exploitation, while Martina becomes a target.

Episode 4

Landmines

Ballard's grieves, but Yulia’s case and a recycled gun sharpen focus even as the Tony Montana twist feels cartoonish.

Episode 5

What's Done in the Dark

A storage unit of graves, Parker gives a raw confession that finally get the season some teeth.

Episode 6

Beneath the Surface

With homicide circling to take over, Ballard survives Driscoll's knife, and Parker confronts Olivas.

Episode 7

Fork in the Road

Stitched up but unbroken, Ballard works the Lee family case and eventually talks Jun down.

Episode 8

Last Call

Olivas falls from smug predator to prisoner as Martina risks herself, and the Pearlman case stays alive thanks to a smear of lipstick.

Episode 9

Collateral

Naomi's broken memory exposes Gary Pearlman as the killer, and Rawls redeems himself only to be gunned down.

Episode 10

End of the Line

Gary confesses, but the season ends with her arrested for Olivas's murder by a system eager to crush her.

Much love,

Maureen

Maureen Gil Pinterest This past weekend, I visited my wonderful friend, E.O. Connors. It's always a good time, catching up, watching scary movies, and talking shop. Her friend, who also happens to have the same first name, baked me a pumpkin spice whoopie pie. I have a fascination with whoopie pies, because they are one of two things I cannot seem to make correctly. (Sourdough bread is the other.) Whoopie pies are considered a traditional Pennsylvania Dutch treat. They have an entire...

Maureen Gil Pinterest I owe you an apology for going dark these past months. Life and work piled up, and instead of pushing through, I let the silence stretch longer than I planned. So I want to thank you for being here with, and for, me. If you no longer want to be on the mailing list, I understand. My feeling won't be hurt. Too much. The good news is I’ve dusted myself off and gotten back to writing. I’m updating old posts, publishing new recaps and reviews, and finally giving my blogs some...
